Mercy Johnson the super actress, sure needs little introduction. She occupies a place in any top 5 list of Nollywood’s powerful amazons. Since the likes of Ini Edo and Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha have now either gone AWOL or their acting careers have been suffocated by their marital status, Mercy Johnson has taken over the throne of the Queen of Nollywood’s home video market.
Mercy J as she is fondly called, has become the last girl standing. Though married with a beautiful daughter, Purity, Mercy remains dominant on the streets of Nollywood. Nothing seems able to slow her down. Infact I gathered that Producers multi-task her now on set. Forget the “ban Mercy Johnson jingoism”, she is their only sure ticket to recouping their investments at the moment. They use her on different sets simultaneously. The question is, why?
Is it because she is the only beautiful actress in Nollywood at the moment with killer physiognomy? Or is it that Mercy Johnson has become the cash cow…the bankable actress to beat? I think the latter is the case. We have other actresses with intimidating physiques like Ebube Nwagbo, Anita Joseph, Ini Edo etc, but Mercy Johnson is not just captivating beauty wise, she is extremely talented! She gives every role a 100% interpretation. She has not only remained relevant, she has also taken her acting career to a whole new level. This captivating screen goddess shocked everybody by swinging into comedy!
I was dazed by her extremely bewitching acting genius when I watched her in ‘Dumebi the dirty girl’. That’s another completely different Mercy. Imagine Mercy freely flipping out her fresh melons ( breast) to breast-feed a baby in a Nigerian film without shame? The norm for her likes has been the roles of play girls, lover girls or spoilt daughter of a wicked mother (Patience Ozokwor) but Mercy has done the unbelievable by joining the comedy ring with the likes of Funke Akindele and becoming a strong contender as a major comic character interpreting force.
Mercy Johnson has proven herself as a versatile actress–what a football coach will call a utility player. Since the Omotolas and Genevieves stepped up their games by focusing on only big screen projects, one can confidently say Mercy Johnson-Okojie has become the new Queen of home videos! This is without mincing words.
Mercy Johnson was born in Kogi State, once lived in Calabar, Cross River State but found fame and fortune in Eko, Lagos State.
